As August approaches, Montana’s fishing scene is thriving, but excitement is building as archery season draws near. The rut will soon lead some elk to be more preoccupied, making some unexpected wildlife encounters even more common. However, amidst the thrill of outdoor adventures, it’s essential to stay vigilant for ungulates crossing roads, especially in areas where deer and elk roadkill sightings are not uncommon.

Drive with caution and remember, just like being bear aware, being elk aware is equally important in areas where there are elk. Safety should always be a priority.

Speaking of elk encounters, check out these incredible photos shared by a listener of the Montana Outdoor Radio Show. There were approximately 50 head of elk in this herd in the photos captured this afternoon, and they just cross when they want to cross.

Be careful out there as you’re traveling, folks!
