Last week, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks issued a press release saying corner crossing is illegal in Montana. For those who don’t know, corner crossing is the act of stepping from one corner of public land to another at the point where the two corners meet. The issue has been a hot topic since a Wyoming judge recently found four Missouri hunters not guilty of trespassing in a civil suit. The men also faced state criminal charges and were found not guilty. The ruling has no precedent, however, applying only to that specific case. Yet many hunters and landowners are once again discussing the topic. Montana has twice tried to settle the issue in the Legislature. In 2013 legislation to legalize the act was voted down. In 2017, a bill to outlaw the act died in committee.
